Bonnie and the Pretenders

Here's a great, but very hard to find, review / comparison / road test between the Kawasaki W650, the new Triumph Bonneville, and an original Bonnie.

  1. When did people stop writing reviews like this? It's thoughtful, critical and well-written. I'm blaming colour photography. Now you get 3 glossy pictures for every 100 words of press-release derived text.

The W650 scores really well on the tests. Interesting that it seems to hold its own, performance wise, when compared to the new Bonneville. I'm curious as to when it got the reputation of being a 'slow' bike. (Especially when it's faster than the original!)

I keep reading more comments online about the W650: "I had one, great bike, did 60,000 miles on it before I sold it. Still ran beautifully." was the last thing I read today on a forum. I wonder if the 800 keeps this reputation. I've also read the 800 puts out a whopping 1hp more than the standard. Hmmm.

I'm still going to test ride the Bonnie and see if it blows me away. If the engine is truly as dull as many of the more honest reviews say it is, I think I'll hand the keys back and politely pass.
